This month past has been hi-jacked by Chaos.
Pure and Simple.
Complete disorder. Run amok. Disheartening lows. Crazy highs.
We moved into our long-dreamed-for Log Cabin {Finally!} With boxes piled high and scattered belongings in complete disarray, we can at last say, We are Home!
It's a happy chaos, this putting our life into order one messy box at a time... How we've longed for this day!
And within moments of crossing the threshold of that dream, the call came from nurses that dad was being rushed to the Emergency Room.
Breath coming in gasps, his COPD had flared and became life-threatening within hours. Hours became days, stranded in the hospital, speaking in hushed whispers, living out of overnight bags and hanging onto each new report... Life in Chaos... striving for calm, but losing the battle as we struggled with the truth of this insidious disease.
I've decided that the clean, quiet, sterile halls of a hospital hide a frightening, scary, dark side. Ordinary people are facing overwhelming news and difficult prognoses behind most every door we passed. Throwing lives into turmoil...a miserable kind of chaos to be sure.
The roller-coaster ride of this COPD journey found us heading home with dad after a week of breathing treatments, heavy-duty antibiotics and LOTS of steroids.
The chaos of that week faded back into a grateful "normal" as dad found his smile (and his appetite... thank you prednisone!) With thankful hearts, we hugged him hard and headed for a brief respite to recoup .. fall camping with friends in the hills of central Texas...
But the very next week found us back in the Emergency room with dad's breathing even worse than before. Doctor consults, tests and IV's, the concerned murmurs... Chaos returned with a vengance.
COPD is an agonizingly slow descent into sheer panic. The air hunger, the labored breathing, the subtle, sly loss of everyday activities we take for granted, the terrifying feeling of suffocating in the dark midnight hours... this is a chaos of the hardest kind. Fighting an implacable disease that does not relent.
No winning. No cure. No Hope.
As dad's breathing worsened, his doctor gently approached us with the difficult news... there was nothing more that could be done to ease the ache in his lungs.
Air left the room.
We have long prepared ourselves for this moment, but there is no preparing...
Dad is transitioning into hospice care and our hearts tremble between an anguished grief for the road ahead and an intense relief that there is a comfort available for which dad is so desperate.
The hours and days to come? A Hard Chaos that we are determined to walk out well.
We have been in this place before.
Mom walked it out almost 8 years ago, and Dad remembers well the compassion and grace offered by the hands of her hospice team.
Now, he faces the work of this last mile.
And we will be there each step of the way, he does not walk alone. It is the prayer of our heart, the sacrifice of family from far and wide, that ensures he will be loved much in the days ahead.
That love can turn the chaos into peace... of that I am sure.
Resting in the God who makes order out of chaos and chooses to love us better than we could ever imagine.
That is Peace for tonight.

Our Lake Place Update... 2018
Here's our annual State of the Union address from the Lake... {smile}
Last year saw the Log-Raising of our gorgeous little cabin in the woods!
The Satterwhite Log Home crew rode in, transformed that pile of logs into a house and left in a record 18 days!
Then it was our turn! Yikes! Time to finish out the interior... it may be taking us a tad longer than 18 days! Lol!
But never fear, we're making progress! Slow progress, but it's progress!! 2018 saw the completion of so many projects! And there are pictures... of course!
When the log crew left, the first job was to get that roof shingled!
The view from the top isn't bad...
That's Lake Texoma in the distance.
Next up... cleaning the construction debris and salvaging what we could use for future projects and burning the rest ;-)
Inside work began soon after the Satterwhite crew left... the Plumber came in for the Stack Out Phase. He'll be back when it's time to install the sinks, tubs, toilets and hot water heater. For now, things are roughed into place.
Alongside the plumber, came the electrical wiring...
And one of my favorite projects... the Gable Windows!
Satterwhite's homes come with all doors and windows,
except for the custom windows.
We chose Red River glass for the Gables and couldn't be happier!
Love, Love, Love!
And in the midst of all that construction mess,
one of our fall blooming Irises graced us with this beauty!
Staining the concrete floors was next...
who knew it would be so hard to pick a color!
The winner was Loden and the helpers were just the best! Couldn't have done it without you!
(Thank you for not shooting me on the spot... back breaking work times ten!)
But the results... Love!
Next up... the spray foam insulation... when it was all said and done it felt like we were standing inside a big, white, fluffy marshmallow! Lol!
Once the logs were in place, it was crucial to get them cleaned, preserved and sealed quickly.
We chose to keep the clean, light look of the wood and used a clear sealer on the inside, each log was sanded, wiped down and then brushed with primer and sealer...
Remember how hard dreams can be? Yes!
But so very worth the wait!
And once the inside walls were sealed, it was on to the outside!
Here we are, the fabulous Exterior Log Wall cleaning crew...
time to scrub those logs and get them ready for the staining and chinking!
Cami was quite suspicious of the water and the hoses...
never could convince her to join us!
But this little helper was the best...
And then after working so hard, she decided we needed a selfie...
Scrunch down, she said!
Love her happy little soul we do!
Another decision time... picking stain colors...
And the winner is... Stone Gray!
Two coats, sprayed on and brushed in.
Then came the chinking...
We chose the Smoky Mountain log profile from Satterwhite. This log comes with a scribed chinking line. After staining the logs, the chinking is then painted on. We get the look, as well as the tight, secure log wall we need. Perfect!
And finally, the clear coat sealer!
Hallelujah! Exterior log walls are done!! Yay!
But not so fast... the cedar trim is just waiting for its turn!
Time for staining of all the cedar trim...
Now we're done with the Exterior work!
Next project was the kitchen cabinetry.
We ordered the cabinets from Ikea and they arrived...
unassembled... in 88 boxes!
Yikes!
Farmer husband had a moment... but he is so patient with my dreams!
{Love him to pieces}
Cami gave up after an hour and found herself a box to nap in... grin
Ta Da! One down, only ten to go!
Add in a little white shiplap and the kitchen is starting to come together!
While the kitchen was taking shape, the Hvac crew was busy setting the furnace and all the ductwork...
Our next project was interior trim for the doors and windows.
Each piece was cut to fit, edges routered smooth, and sanded,
then the meticulous job of priming and sealing began!
Worth every minute once they were all in place...
It's beginning to look like a real home!
One of the things we were most excited about was the woodstove...
we got it installed just in time for the Christmas festivities!
We not only love the look, but also the warmth...
that little stove can heat the whole cabin!
It's starting to look like a real house...
Landscaping is slated for this Spring!
Can't wait!
Whewww! We have done a lot this last year!
Sometimes in the middle of the hard and the sweat,
you lose sight of the ground gained!
We haven't moved in yet... there's still much to do, but the projects are a joy to this dreamer. One day soon we will cross the threshold and call it home!
Ceilings of sunny aspen and magnificent concrete countertops are up next... Stay tuned!

The Journey Home...
Over these past few months, we've had much on our plate...
It has been the most heavy of privileges, walking a dear mother home... our hearts have cried, the peace in our family has trembled... and in the days and weeks since, our spirits have slowly found rest.
In between the many, many trips home to sit at her bedside, we have watched Satterwhite raise our Log Home back here in Texas... it was as if we were living 2 wildly divergent lives.
Standing vigil to the ending of a beautiful life, just as we were beginning to see our life in retirement falling into place...
And that sweet mother-in-law asked us every time we came up how the house was coming along {heart sigh}... Right up to the end, she wanted to know the details, loved looking at the pictures we brought.
She was happy for us. It was a gift... and this house has given us a bit of that joy back. In the midst of grief there is also hope. A nod to the good in our lives, the legacy we leave in the dreams we follow...
The Satterwhite Log Home crew arrived in October with huge truckloads of fragrant spruce logs and we watched in awe as our home came to life before our very eyes!
Picture Overload Ahead (!) Just because, well, because, it has been a dream for so long... we don't take this treasure for granted, not for a single minute!

We're halfway home... log cabin is up and weather-tight,
now the interior work begins!
Each project is a step in the journey...
and that journey is a grand adventure!
Praying your steps lead to a journey of joy,
to legacy living of the sweetest kind.
My Love,
Always,
Jane
