Baby It's Cold Outside!

Polar Vortex... Artic Blast...
It may be crazy cold, but how amazing is this pic?

Michael Davies is the intrepid photographer,
tossing tea on the Tundra in Canada in a -40 degree deep freeze!

Beauty for this day.
Yet so mindful of the dangerously brutal cold...

Prayers for every one facing winter's icy grip,
may you be surrounded by love and warmth and kept safe through the storm.

Graced to know that Spring is coming!

My Love, Always,

Cold Fronts, And Sheets and Tiny, Tiny Tree Frogs...

Cold fronts a-moving in... time to pull out the sweaters and scarfs!  Oh, and light up the woodstove.  Love this crisp fall weather.  But not the freezing temps so much...

My to-do list just got a mile longer.  Winterize the pipes.  Heat lamps for the chicks.  Haul hay for the goats.  Top off water tanks.  Pick the last of the tomatoes and green peppers (yes, we still have the garden growing, the glories of a Texas Fall!)

And just as I caught myself running ragged, I remembered all the pretty plants on the back deck...

Maybe, just maybe we could cover them with sheets and pray for a "mild" freeze?  Not quite ready yet to lose the beauty, the sweet fragrance as we walk by...

And I rush in to get the sheets, rummaging thru drawers to find as many as I can, then rushing back out, linens billowing all around...

...and in the rushing to protect and cover up, I almost missed him...

Sweet, little tree frog.

Blending in, keeping still, but for the frantic beating heart.
My billowing sheets must have scared him silly.
Hung on to the dried oak leaf he did, surely praying I would pass him by...

But then I stilled my rushing, bent the knee and nodded, eye to eye...

Sometimes we just need to slow down and smile thanks for the offering.

Praying for the warmth of family and friends to hold you close this chilly night
and for these moments to still, just slow down and bring peace to each heart...

Carving Beauty from Destruction

In 2008 Hurricane Ike blew into Galveston Texas with ferocious intensity...

The Island was devastated.  The storm battered and shrieked with murderous intent.   Homes were destroyed, trees toppled, and flood waters rose unstoppable.  In the end, 37 people lost their lives in Texas and the Island of Galveston was declared uninhabitable.

But the resilience of the human soul is an amazing thing...

In less than 5 years, the historic, downtown Galveston
went from this...

to this...

Last weekend, during our Galveston Girls-Getaway, our group had the blissful pleasure of strolling the streets of downtown Galveston.  We chatted, we oohed, we ahhhed, we relished the blue sky sunny day and soaked it all in... marveling that a Hurricane had so completely shattered this peaceful neighborhood just a few short years ago.

As a part of our afternoon, we took the self-guided Tree Sculpture Tour.  A truly beautiful way to honor the irrepressible spirit of the Galveston people.

On September 13th, 2008, when Hurricane Ike hit, most of the Island was covered in a tidal surge. The damaging combination of powerful wind and waves immediately uprooted many trees,

but ultimately the salty storm waters led to the demise of the thousands of others. Ike forced Galveston to say a sad goodbye to so much of its beautiful tree canopy.

As restoration projects began in the devastated neighborhoods, an idea took root and spread contagious.  Many of the homeowners commissioned chainsaw artists to create works of art, sculptures from the beautiful, old trees that had been killed in the storm.

Each private resident chose their theme and paid for the work.  Some sculptures are large and intricate, others are small and delicate.

But all are simply amazing.

There are over 30 sculptures...and counting...

These whimsical sculptures have replaced the majestic oaks that once lined many neighborhood streets and shaded homes.
Tucked into gardens and nestled in side yards the sculptures are there for the public to enjoy.

One of our girls softly touched the wood, warmed by the sun.
It's sad, she said, to realize that these trees used to be so full of life, offering shade to those passing by, leaves to rustle in the breeze, roost to the song birds for refuge, and beauty for any who looked...
And now they are gone.
But, another said into the stillness, offering beauty still for any who look...

And they are all reminders that beauty can be carved from even the most devastating of storms.

"But now, this is what the LORD says,
'Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
Since you are precious and honored in my sight,
and because I love you..."
                               ~Isaiah 43:1-4

So many of us are facing our own storms.

It may be a cancer diagnosis, a marriage gone wrong,
a child lost, a financial ruin...

These are all Storms of devastation and pain,
of uncertainty and hurt, even of loss and grief...

We will all pass through the waters
and we will fear and tremble as they threaten to sweep over us...

But even in these devastating storms there will be redemption.

And there can be beauty.

Yes, the storms will change us. When the waters rise, we cannot help but be changed, and yet all is not lost, even after the ferocious intensity of the tempest...

For we are, each one, precious in His sight.
And waiting to be carved into beautiful by the Master Sculptor.

In the aftermath of our storms, as we wrestle with the grief of things lost,
May we rest, this day, in the Grace of His Providential and Tender Hand.

Finding Beauty After the Storm,
Always,  Jane

Buongiorno!

Good morning from beautiful Italy...

This past week has been nothing short of a fairytale. Visiting a land so steeped in history, culture and beauty is sheer pleasure. We have ooohed and aaaawed all week, delighting in this little bit of paradise.

...the immensity of centuries of humanity in Rome, crumbling walls spilling their stories,

...the time-travel effect of entering the medieval, walled city of Lucca, graceful and timeless,

...the natural beauty of the vineyards of Montecarlo in Tuscany, wine-sweetened bliss,

...the sacred cathedrals whispering God's love through the ages in worn stone and shimmering mosaics,

...the breath-taking wonder of a drive along the Amalfi coast,

...the charming cafe perched precariously on the side of the cliffs of Positano overlooking a serene Mediterranean sea, all drenched in sun and hospitality...

Does it get any better? My heart is on overload.

God's Grace in Postcard Perfection...

p.s. Pictures to follow in days to come.  Seriously... so many pictures!!

Camouflage Surprises

Sometimes, the beautiful is hidden right before our very eyes...

Our weekend wanderings brought us nose to nose with the most slithery of forest creatures!  How many times have I just walked right on by and missed the delicate designs, glorious in subtle display?

We slowed our steps, loving the fall whisper in the air and marveled at all the treasure!

Lizard stilled, daring not a breath, disappearing into the leaf-strewn landscape...

Fuzzy caterpillar, snuggled into the ground, mirroring the brown earth...

Baby turtle, trying to hide in the leafy shelter...

But, oh, dismay over unexpected discovery...

Dismay turning to fright as Leroy's quick hand averts disaster!
(DO NOT try this at home - he is a trained expert!  Smile!)

The muted patterns of the snake skin disguised him well amidst the bark mulch and those same patterns heralded a cottonmouth, venomous and dangerous.  But upon closer inspection...

The rounded pupils and the yello-green belly indentify this slithery fellow as a Texas Rat Snake, thankfully non-venomous!!

And so, he received an honorary trip to the woods, far, far away from my flower beds!

Catch and Release - it was his lucky day...

As I watched Leroy release the snake, I was amazed at how quickly he disappeared from sight.  Blending in perfectly with his surroundings.  My camera was not quick enough to even catch a glimpse.  Within seconds you would never know he had crossed our paths...

And it occurred to me that everyday, there are people who cross our paths, and never register on our radar.

They are camouflaged from sight.  Sometimes deliberately.  Shrinking from view.  Still and shadowed.  Barely breathing, lest we notice.  Perhaps out of pain.  Or shame.  The camouflage masking their hurt.

And we have a choice.  To open our eyes, to walk slow.  See past the camouflage and be blessed by the beauty...

I am reminded of the day mom and I arrived at the chemo lab for her appointment and met Linda (*).  We arrived to an almost empty chemo lab.  Unusual in the extreme.  The lab held over 30 chemo chairs and on most days they were always full.

This day, for whatever reason, there were only a handful of patients, and as mom and I settled in, we noticed her sitting across from us.  Her bald head was covered with a Texas Ranger ball cap, a colorful quilt draped across her lap.  I recognized the quilt and knew that we had been there together before.  But I had never noticed the flute that lay in her still hands across the quilt.

As mom's gemzar drip began, we bantered with Lance, mom's favorite nurse, and the conversation rolled out to include Linda.   She was quiet, but had a beautiful, shy smile. We asked, of course, about the flute.  She said she loved to play and sometimes, if the lab was empty, she would play to get her mind off the cancer....and the chemo....

And I wondered why I had never noticed her before.

We asked her to play and she demurely declined.  We pressed and "pleased"... She finally agreed.

The clear, delicate notes hung in the air and quiet descended upon the few blessed to be there that day.  The melody was hauntingly beautiful, the music taking us beyond the walls of that chemo lab. Beyond the boundaries of cancer...

Linda and mom talked long that afternoon, sharing their stories of tumor markers, hospital stays, ups and downs, fears of the future, and the hopes begging to be uttered....things that only 2 cancer patients could truly understand, kindred spirits bonded through the affliction of a terminal illness.

I listened and learned much.

This weekend, the story beat a renewed tatoo in the treasure of lizards and snakes, turtles and 'pillars.

Never underestimate the camouflage...

Or you will miss Blessings of Beauty...

Grace Released,
                         Always, Jane

Chihuly in the Garden

Sounds a tad racy, doesn't it?!

A little Chihuly in the Garden... Moonlit nights, rose-strewn pathway, gardenia scent in the air...Well, for goodness sakes, who knew it was a famous Venetian-trained Glass Blower Exhibit at the Dallas Arboretum?!

Amazing Artistry!

This piece is called The Sun and is made up of over 1,000 individual, hand-blown pieces.  It is breath-taking in its scope, standing almost 3 stories tall and taking over 4 days to carefully assemble in the garden.  (Can't imagine packing that crate for travel!)

The artist, Dale Chihuly, creates free-standing glass sculptures with flare and drama.  These art pieces have been exhibited at museums, gardens, architectural environments and galleries throughout the world.  We are blissfully fortunate to have his exhibit showcased here at the Dallas Arboretum.

So, of course, it was a must-see trip to the Garden this week with good friend and adventurer, Tina!

Here are just a few of the magnificent pieces in and around the Garden:

And, then there's Chihuly at Night...
even more Magnificent I'm told!

Stay tuned...

Glorious Explosion!

I've come to the conclusion that there are basically two seasons in Texas.

DRY...

and WET...

For just a few short weeks every year, the two COLLIDE...

and we are gifted with a Glorious Explosion of Color!!!!

...in the gardens

...along the roads

...even in the pasture!

We call it Spring!  And it lasts not near long enough, but oh, do I love the balmy days.  There's a sweet scent in the air, the haze of green everywhere and the vibrant display of nature in splendid disarray.  Winter has had long enough to wrap us in her cold arms of grief.  We are ready to breath deep and welcome fresh starts and new joys.

Mom would approve...

There's the slam of screendoors, the lazy buzz of bumblebees and a tall, glass of ice tea to remind me that summer is soon to follow.  For now, I'm enjoying every last minute of our Texas Spring!

And tomorrow we're heading off for a long weekend camping with friends.

The camper's old, but she's faithful!  This time we explore the Piney Woods of East Texas.  And relax into the rhythm of nature.  No time clocks, no hurry-ups, no conflicting schedules... Just time, precious time to catch up to doing nothing but laughing, loving and living... in the beautiful kaleidoscope of Spring.  It's about time we put that on our schedule!

May your weekend wanderings be filled with bursts of joy and life.  Breathe deep and enjoy every minute.
